  • Behind Brein Food is Selin Colak, a psychologist based in Amsterdam.

    My work is grounded in evidence-based psychological practice, alongside a holistic and integrative perspective on well-being, where mind, body, and environment are closely connected. I am particularly interested in how people relate to food beyond nutrition, as something tied to emotion, regulation, and everyday experience, and how this relationship can shift in more supportive and sustainable ways.

    Brein Food is an extension of this way of thinking, where psychology meets a more gentle and holistic understanding of health, behaviour, and emotional well-being.

  • For many years, my relationship with food felt anything but simple. I turned to it for comfort in moments of stress, only to be met with guilt and overwhelm afterward. Binge eating became a cycle I couldn’t seem to break, something I didn’t fully understand but deeply wanted to change.

    Over time, I began to realise that recovery isn’t about control or discipline. It’s about learning to listen to what your body is asking for, to what your emotions are trying to say, and to what you truly need in the moment. Healing came through curiosity and compassion, not rules or restriction.

    ​As I studied psychology, I started to understand what I had lived through: how our emotions, thoughts, and physical health are woven together. Food isn’t just nourishment; it’s communication, it’s comfort, it’s connection. Understanding how the mind and body influence one another helped me see food in a new way: as something that can bring balance and care, rather than stress.

    ​Brein Food grew from that understanding. A space built on gentle nutrition and psychological insight, created to support anyone who feels stuck in the cycle of guilt, craving, and control. Here, food is not a set of rules to follow but a relationship to rebuild; slowly, kindly, and in your own time.

  • At Brein Food, our approach is rooted in 'gentle nutrition' a philosophy that blends psychological insight with a compassionate, balanced understanding of nourishment. Gentle nutrition moves away from rigid rules and all-or-nothing thinking. Instead, it invites you to reconnect with your body, understand your emotional patterns, and make choices that support your well-being with ease and flexibility.

    ​We believe that food should feel supportive, not stressful. Every person has their own story, strengths, and way of relating to food, and our content, workshops, and resources are designed to honour that individuality. Brein Food focuses on helping you build awareness, find clarity, and cultivate habits that feel nourishing rather than restrictive.

    Our goal is to create a space that feels warm, approachable, and non-judgmental, where learning about nutrition, the gut–mind connection, and emotional well-being feels empowering and accessible. We share tools, ideas, and gentle guidance that help you build a healthier relationship with food and with yourself, all in a way that fits real life.

  • Brein Food is not focused on rules, restrictions, or meal plans. I am not a nutritionist. Instead of changing what you eat, the focus is on understanding why you eat the way you do. We explore your relationship with food, emotions, stress, and body awareness, so change can come from insight and connection rather than control or external guidelines.

  • Getting started is simple. Reach out through the contact form. I’ll walk you through the next steps and answer any questions along the way.

  • Brein Food is a coaching-based approach, not psychotherapy or medical treatment. While my background is in psychology, this work is not a clinical treatment setting. It is focused on reflection, awareness, and personal development rather than diagnosing or treating mental health conditions.

  • Coaching offers a more personal and in-depth exploration of your individual patterns and experiences. Workshops are more theme-based and reflective, offering insights and practical tools in a broader format. Many people find that combining both can be helpful, depending on their needs and where they are in their process.

  • This depends on your personal goals and needs. Some people come for a short series of sessions to gain clarity on specific patterns, while others prefer a longer process of deeper exploration and change. We regularly reflect together on what feels supportive for you.

  • At the moment, all sessions are offered online only. This allows for flexibility and accessibility from wherever you are.

  • Appointments can be cancelled or rescheduled up to 24 hours in advance. Cancellations made within 24 hours of the session may be charged in full.

  • Brein Food coaching is not covered by health insurance, and sessions cannot be reimbursed through insurance providers.

  • Brein Food can support people with difficulties around food, eating patterns, and body image. However, if there is a severe or clinically diagnosed eating disorder that requires specialised medical or psychiatric treatment, I am not able to provide the appropriate level of care within this coaching setting. In those cases, I will always encourage and support you in accessing the right clinical support.
